Workforce ADL Co-Laboratory

FITThe Workforce Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Laboratory (Workforce ADL Co-Lab), located at the FedEx Institute of Technology on the campus of the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee, is the catalyst of ADL implementation in industry, serving as a facilitator of the development and integration of ADL technologies in industry to enhance the learning and training of the workforce of the future.

The Workforce ADL Co-Lab is the mechanism that promotes adoption of ADL technologies industry through education, technical training and accessibility to solutions that will contribute to the creation of the advanced digital knowledge environment in workforce settings.

Mission

The Workforce Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Laboratory (Workforce ADL Co-Lab) is a collaborative effort between the University of Memphis and the ADL Co-Lab Network. The mission of the Workforce ADL Co-Lab is to support the ADL vision by advancing the development of emerging e-learning technologies to commercial implementations, connecting private businesses in an open, collaborative environment for information sharing, training, research and development.

Vision

Workforce training needs to provide a solution for the individual by focusing on the five R’s: the right skills, for the right job, delivered in the right place, at the right time, in the right way.

Promoting Standards in Industry

The Workforce ADL Co-Lab facilitates the development, refinement and adoption of e-learning standards in industry by conducting the following activities:

  • Providing expert information and support to e-learning standards, content, tools and systems developers in industry who seek to implement the standards of the ADL Initiative
  • Educating industry about the benefits of e-learning and interoperable e-learning standardization 
  • Conducting empirical and applied research on how e-learning best meets the ADL vision 
  • Tapping into industry innovation and leadership to increase the reach and magnitude of the ADL Initiative 
  • Providing a collaborative testbed for industry participation and experimentation.

Collaborating with Industry

The Workforce Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Laboratory (Workforce ADL Co-Lab), is a collaborative effort between the FedEx Institute of Technology on the campus of the University of Memphis and the ADL Co-Lab Network. The mission of the Workforce ADL Co-Lab is to support the ADL vision by advancing the development of emerging e-learning technologies to commercial implementations, connecting private industry with an open, collaborative environment for information sharing, training, research and development.

By energizing an efficient market for e-learning, both public and private sector organizations can better meet their training needs. The Workforce ADL Co-Lab seeks to become the mechanism that facilitates this activity, resulting in increased efficiency, lower costs and new markets for e-learning content, tools and systems. The Workforce ADL Co-Lab is primarily responsible for the following activities: 

  • Partnering with corporations, industry associations and other organizations 
  • Increasing the accessibility of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM ® ) specifications through the creation of documentation.
  • Building awareness among producers and implementers developing e-learning standards 
  • Broadening the scope of the ADL Initiative by engaging multinational corporate partners, and combining resources to increase private sector involvement.

Bringing the ADL Initiative to Industry

The vision of the Workforce ADL Co-Lab is to be the mechanism that facilitates mass education and increases accessibility to SCORM standards, for large-scale adoption of SCORM by industry, resulting in lower development and training costs. We look to do this by:

  • Informing industry of the value and benefits of the ADL Initiative 
  • Facilitating lower development costs for producers and consumers of e-learning technologies, which equates to lower training costs 
  • Collaborating in the development of SCORM solutions for specific industries in the private sector.
